My passion for legal work is deeply rooted in my family history, inspired by my great-grandfather Alexander, one of Bulgaria’s most notable lawyers during the challenging communist era. I’ll never forget a story my grandmother told me about one of his most remarkable cases—a criminal trial with an unexpected and astonishing outcome.

A man had been convicted of a brutal murder involving multiple stabbings and was sentenced to prison. Desperate to appeal, he sought the help of a new, more energetic lawyer, and his original attorney referred him to my great-grandfather. When Alexander met the man, who adamantly maintained his innocence, he carefully observed his demeanor and listened intently to his account. Something about the man’s story resonated with Alexander, and he became convinced of his innocence, determined to fight for him.

The crime scene had long since been processed, making Alexander’s task far from easy. Yet, through persistent and meticulous investigation, he eventually proved the man’s innocence. But how? The turning point came down to two key witnesses—two women who had testified that the man was guilty. Alexander sensed something was off in their testimonies, suspecting they were hiding the truth.

Undeterred, he revisited the crime scene. Though it had been cleaned up after the conviction, Alexander had an idea: he asked a forensic team to peel back the wooden floorboards, hoping to find anything that might shed light on what had happened. In a stroke of luck and determination, they discovered a single drop of blood hidden in the creases of the floor. After testing, it was revealed that the blood belonged not to a human, but to a rooster.

This discovery unraveled the entire case. Further investigation revealed that the two women had been involved in a heated argument with the victim over a large sum of money. In their rage, they had stabbed him to death at their home, then moved his body to a different location, using the rooster’s blood to frame Alexander’s client for the murder.

Thanks to my great-grandfather’s relentless pursuit of the truth and his keen attention to detail, justice was served, and the wrongfully convicted man was freed.

This story taught me the power of nonverbal cues and how much people reveal through their actions, even when they try to hide the truth. In my work in jury investigation and analysis, I apply the same principles. By carefully observing people and digging deep into the details, we can uncover critical information that can make all the difference in achieving justice.
